Artist Statement
Drawing has always been a consistent activity I do at every outing with my family. Growing up with a vivid imagination and short supplies, I populated my worlds on the pages in every chance that I had available. As time passed, that moment increased to the point that even during assignments, I would sketch something quick that came to mind, from small yet detailed flowers to characters from cartoons and games. The development and practice with alternative materials did not come to me until later in life. Despite this, I find that such circumstances have greatly defined my approach to artwork.
From the moment I pick a pencil, I’m already envisioning the process in my mind and how to achieve the desired angles and shades. Since I was young, I have reflected that my work cannot be replicated, which has led me to work on the final product directly. Once upon a time, imperfections frustrated me and would lead to multiple works not getting finished, but now, I have accepted imperfection as part of the process. With my learning experience and access to new forms of material, I come to embrace imperfection and make it part of the artwork. Even with watercolor, I have found the technique refreshing and freeing because they don’t need to follow the linework for the image to look beautiful.
Art is meant to be enjoyed and holds neither right nor wrong answers, which is something I first had a hard time accepting when I started to draw. I also wish for people to be more accepting of error in their artwork since it is a reflection that nobody is perfect; we are all trying our best.
